Dr Harvey Dillon After completing an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Dr Harvey Dillon was awarded a PhD for research into psychoacoustics. Harvey Dillon joined the National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) in 1979 and until 1986 he performed research into speech discrimination testing, audiological testing in sound fields, speech processing for hearing aids, hearing aid fitting methods, and the acoustics of hearing aid coupling systems. From 1986 to 1990 he held various positions (including Chief Engineer and Development Manager) in the operational area of NAL (now called Hearing Australia). From 1990 he headed the Hearing Aid Research Section of NAL and was the Director of NAL from 2000 until 2017. Dr Dillon has lectured extensively in the areas of acoustics, psychoacoustics, and hearing aids in the audiology program at Macquarie University, at which institution he is now a part-time professor, engaged in research into methods of diagnosing the causes of listening difficulties in children with normal hearing thresholds. He is also a part-time Visiting Professor of Auditory Science at the University of Manchester where he is involved in hearing aid research. Career Choice: Harvey Dillon did his study in the fields of Electronic Engineering and in psychoacoustics – the investigation of how people hear. He looked around for a career that would let him combine these skills. Research into better ways to design and adjust hearing aids seemed perfect, and any advances could immediately help people. Hearing impairment is one of the most prevalent disabilities in our society, and although hearing aids are now very advanced, there was, and still is, much room for improvement. The methods for adjusting hearing aids devised by Dr Dillon and his colleagues at the National Acoustic Laboratories are the most used clinical procedures for fitting hearing aids in the world. Exercising his mind more recently is the problem of diagnosing why some children with normal hearing thresholds nevertheless have difficulty understanding speech in even slightly acoustically challenging situations. Dr Dillon says that he counts himself very lucky to do work that he enjoys immensely and which other people find useful.
